{"id":11246,"date":"2011-09-12T16:32:47","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T20:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cfif.org\/v\/freedom_line_blog\/?p=11246"},"modified":"2011-09-12T16:32:47","modified_gmt":"2011-09-12T20:32:47","slug":"former-obama-economist-recommends-10-year-plan-soviets-envious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cfif.org\/v\/freedom_line_blog\/11246\/former-obama-economist-recommends-10-year-plan-soviets-envious\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Obama Economist Recommends 10 Year Plan, Soviets Envious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Larry Summers, the economist whose resume includes helping create the kind of mortgage default swaps that <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/mojo\/2008\/11\/obama-taps-larry-summers-recalling-summers-days-regulation-foe\" target=\"_blank\">crashed the financial system<\/a>, being <a href=\"http:\/\/thefire.org\/article\/6806.html\" target=\"_blank\">fired as President of Harvard<\/a> for sexist remarks about female scientists, and resigning in disgrace as his infrastructure-heavy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearmarkets.com\/articles\/2008\/01\/larry_summers_stimulus_plan_wo.html\" target=\"_blank\">stimulus package failed<\/a>, is back with a plan only a Soviet central planner could love.<\/p>\n<p>Writing for <em>Newsweek <\/em>(itself an entity that\u2019s seen better days), Summers tells his former boss, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/newsweek\/2011\/09\/11\/we-need-a-10-year-plan.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMr. President, We Need a 10 Year Plan.\u201d<\/a> Give Summers credit for brashness; in Soviet Russia the Communist Party considered it a success if it could make good on any of its <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Five-Year_Plans_for_the_National_Economy_of_the_Soviet_Union\" target=\"_blank\"><em>5 year plans<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 (It never did.)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll use Summers\u2019 piece as an excuse to do something otherwise thought impossible: praise President Barack Obama for firing at least one bad economist.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about central planning, Larry; it\u2019s about incentives.\u00a0 Reform the tax code and streamline regulations with incentives for hiring and producing, and the economy will grow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Larry Summers, the economist whose resume includes helping create the kind of mortgage default swaps that crashed the financial system, being fired as President of Harvard for sexist remarks about female scientists, and resigning in disgrace as his infrastructure-heavy stimulus package failed, is back with a plan only a Soviet central planner could love.
