{"id":20840,"date":"2014-06-04T20:02:23","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T00:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cfif.org\/v\/freedom_line_blog\/?p=20840"},"modified":"2014-06-04T20:02:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T00:02:23","slug":"remembering-what-the-taliban-stands-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cfif.org\/v\/freedom_line_blog\/20840\/remembering-what-the-taliban-stands-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering What the Taliban Stands For"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By now you\u2019ve probably heard about the <a href=\"http:\/\/thelead.blogs.cnn.com\/2014\/06\/03\/team-leader-bowe-bergdahl-wanted-to-talk-to-taliban\/ \">scandal<\/a> surrounding the Obama administration\u2019s deal to free five Taliban officials held at Guantanamo Bay for what increasingly looks like a deserter from the U.S. Army stationed in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Those in the mainstream media defending the move \u2013 including a <em>Daily Beast<\/em> columnist who tweeted, \u201cWhat\u2019s the argument that these five Taliban guys are so dangerous? Are they ninjas? Do they have superpowers?\u201d \u2013 would do well to remember how the Taliban\u2019s members earned their cells at Gitmo.<\/p>\n<p>The five released prisoners \u201cwere top officials in the Taliban regime: a provincial governor, a deputy defense minister, a deputy intelligence minister, a top arms smuggler, and a top Taliban military commander. Two of them are wanted by the United Nations for war crimes committed against Afghanistan\u2019s Shiites,\u201d writes <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2014\/06\/04\/why-are-we-releasing-terrorists-who-kill-girls-because-they-go-to-school\/ \" target=\"_blank\">Robert Tracinski<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tracinski then gives a sampling of what these kinds of Taliban officials do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bomb schools because they let girls play sports<\/li>\n<li>Shoot a girl in the head because she stands up for her right to be educated<\/li>\n<li>Mutilate women to punish them for disobedience in their roles as marital slaves<\/li>\n<li>Drag a 7-year-old out of the yard where he is playing and hang him from a tree because his grandfather spoke out against the Taliban<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>America can\u2019t right every wrong in the world, but surely it should be counted on to keep the world safe from criminals in its custody. Freeing five prisoners so they can rejoin the ranks of a known terrorist organization is a deplorable dereliction of duty.
