Image of the Day: Biden, Pelosi and Schumer Faceplanted On Jobs in 2021

On the heels of Friday's unsettling jobs report from the Labor Department, we can now judge the performance and promises of Joe Biden and the Pelosi/Schumer Congress against actual reality.  They promised 10.3 million jobs would be created in 2021 if their massive spending and regulation blowout passed, versus 6.3 million jobs if their agenda wasn't passed.  So how did it turn out?  Their agenda was passed, but only 6.1 million jobs were created as the U.S. economy slowed and struggled to recover from the Covid dip, as AEI's Matt Weidinger highlights.  They apparently made things worse, not better, illustrating the sardonic adage, "Don't just do something - stand there."

61 America’s Energy Future: Scarcity or Abundance?

The American left is uncomfortable with affluence. In the zero-sum world of liberalism, one person’s gain is always perceived to come at another’s expense. So it is that when the conversation turns to the consumption of natural resources, the default assumption of the liberally inclined (particularly among radical environmentalists) is…

62 Blaming “Oil Speculators” Is Like Scapegoating Gamblers for the Super Bowl Result

Gasoline cost $1.84 per gallon in January 2009 when Barack Obama entered the White House.  Today, that cost has more than doubled to almost $4.00 per gallon.  In fact, U.S. News observed this month that gas prices have increased even more under Obama than under Jimmy Carter, he of late-‘70s gas line infamy:  “Obama has…

63 Transparently Corrupt: Links between Obama’s Campaign Donors, Stimulus, and Energy Loans

Multiple independent investigations into the Obama Energy Department’s failed loan program reveal a pattern of corruption involving 2008 campaign bundlers, stimulus funds and sweetheart loan deals.  The reports confirm the suspicion that Solyndra’s $535 million boondoggle was only the tip of the iceberg.  The Role of Bundlers…

64 EPA’s New Rule Kills Coal, Makes Natural Gas King

Move over, Steven Chu and the Department of Energy.  The Environmental Protection Agency’s Lisa Jackson wants a crack at being the Obama Administration’s latest energy sector dictator. Recently, Energy Secretary Chu distanced himself from remarks he made in 2008 that “somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline…

65 Obama Ignores Scandal of Bogus Oil Case

The Obama administration’s animus against American energy companies doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. As the administration continues to stifle domestic fossil-fuels production on a number of fronts, it also refuses to lift a finger diplomatically to support an American company being shaken down for billions of dollars by the hard…

66 Obama’s "Cold Fusion" Presidency

In 1989, two scientists named Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons turned the world on its ear with the announcement that they had pioneered "cold fusion," a process by which it was hoped that mankind would usher in a new era of clean, cheap and abundant energy. There was only one problem: It didn’t work. Scientific researchers were…

67 Obama Plays Politics with America's Energy Future

After three years of waging a war to shut down America’s domestic energy producers of petroleum and coal, President Barack Obama has now refused to approve the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the United States, sacrificing thousands of jobs and millions in economic activity, all to shore up his liberal base at the expense of the rest of the…

68 Keystone Pipeline Delay Compounds America’s Energy Decline

The core economic fallacy of modern liberalism is the belief that government is superior to the private sector in directing markets.   This was the undoing of the stimulus package, which was predicated on the belief that nearly $800 billion centrally distributed from Washington would do more to steer the economy toward growth than that same…

69 New Round of “Climategate” Leaks Deal Another Blow to Global Warming Orthodoxy

“Climategate, Part II” has arrived.  Back in 2009, “Climategate” dealt a crippling blow to the global warming syndicate’s credibility.  And now, just in time for the latest annual climate charade in Durban, South Africa, environmental alarmists face a new round of embarrassing emails leaked anonymously over…

70 Yes, $2 Gasoline is Possible

On gasoline prices, maybe Michelle Bachmann was right. The House member and presidential candidate made waves about a month ago, and received significant criticism, when she promised that a Bachmann presidency could bring gasoline prices down below $2 per gallon. Her detractors said it was a wildly reckless promise because it supposedly is an unachievable…

71 Green Jobs, Red Ink: The Economic Folly of Obama’s Enviro-Meddling

Modern liberalism is a faith defined by the belief that reality is whatever the state says it is. Thus has President Barack Obama often stated his intention to make “clean energy the profitable kind of energy in America.” Over time, the American public has become so anesthetized to this sort of rhetoric that it has assumed an air of plausibility…

72 Mutiny: Even Liberal Democrats Blast Obama’s New Auto Mandates

For the dictatorial Obama Administration, things are deteriorating from bad to borderline catastrophic.  It’s hardly news that Obama’s support among political moderates and conservatives has gradually evaporated since his inauguration.  But now, even hard-core liberals are now warning him that he is simply going overboard. …

73 “Green Jobs” from Government Subsidies Wither on the Vine

When it comes to taxpayer money, economic development bureaucrats like to pretend they’re venture capitalists.  But when government gambles fail, it’s the average citizen – not some wealthy investor – who’s left to pay the bill.  The latest government subsidized fad is promoting “green jobs” with…

74 Only a Partial Win at Supreme Court Against Globaloney Environmental Lawsuit

The Constitution and the concept of judicial restraint each won one huge victory on Monday in an environmental lawsuit out of Connecticut, but only by confirming an earlier encroachment on both the Constitution and right reason. That earlier encroachment still bedevils both constitutional law and public policy. The case decided Monday, American Electric…

75 Gas Prices Reach Historic Highs, Yet Liberals Insist on Raising Taxes on Domestic Oil and Gas Producers

Is now really the time to raise taxes on domestic energy producers?  Gasoline prices are already near historic highs, and we haven’t even reached peak summer driving season.  One year ago, the national average stood at $2.86 per gallon, and the price was just $1.84 when Barack Obama entered the White House in January 2009, according…

76 Obama Tilting at Oil Companies, Propping Up Windmills

In Cervantes’ Don Quixote, the title character repeatedly makes a fool of himself with well-meaning crusades against common sense.  With U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder riding along as Sancho Panza, President Barack Obama is mounting his own quixotic quest: lowering gas prices by increasing the cost of doing business.  One of Don…

77 Obama After BP: Beyond Pathetic

One year to the day after the dreadful BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Obama administration’s responses to the crisis continue blowing holes in the regional and national economies. President Obama’s choices make George W. Bush’s responses to Hurricane Katrina seem like the epitome of competence and wisdom. Gulf…

78 Biofuel: Sowing Hunger Wherever It Grows

With the cost of living climbing to new heights, the world’s poor are tasting the bitter reality of market-distorting government policies.  Biofuels, and the subsidy chasers who love them, damage not only America’s wealth – they make the simple act of eating exponentially more expensive.  From October 2010 to January 2011…

79 Running on Empty with a Full Tank: The Incoherence of Obama’s Energy Policies

Though Barack Obama is a polarizing politician, there’s one thing that his friends and critics seem to agree on: He’s a canny politician. So if the president had the ability to bring down the nation’s staggering gas prices, create new American jobs and decrease the country’s reliance on foreign energy sources without spending…

80 Obama Charts Middle Course of Failure on Libya, Energy

Economic sanctions against Libya are crippling that country’s revenues, and the Libyan conflict is raising the price of gasoline worldwide.  With America barreling toward $5 per gallon gas if the situation gets worse, President Barack Obama continues to chart a middle course of failure between two coherent options for dealing with the Libyan…

81 Studies Show Connection Between Free Markets and a Cleaner Environment

Nice things cost money.  In the 2011 edition of its Index of Economic Freedom, the Heritage Foundation demonstrates that national wealth – not stringent regulations – is the key to creating a cleaner environment.  The Index of Economic Freedom is a joint project of the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal that ranks…

82 Cancun Climatologists: Americans Should Impose “Rationing System” and “Halt Economic Growth”

On this very week in 1942, coffee was added to the list of rationed items in the United States, joining butter, sugar, milk and approximately one-third of consumer food items.  Gasoline purchases were limited to just three gallons per car per week.  Those who lived through it can confirm that it wasn’t enjoyable.  Today, climatologists…

83 “Cool It” – Bjorn Lomborg’s New Cinematic Rebuke to Global Warming Alarmists

Recent events prove that orthodox environmentalists can be a really hateful, vindictive bunch.  We have the scandalous snuff video in which schoolchildren expressing global warming skepticism are literally detonated, their gory entrails splattered upon classmates.  Or consider the “Climategate” scandal in which global warming…

84 Obama’s BP Spill Commission Places Partisanship Above Progress

This week, President Barack Obama’s BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling Commission began hearings in New Orleans to discuss the Gulf accident and the necessary response.  Rather than focusing on unbiased inquiry and saving American jobs, unfortunately, the commission and Obama Administration hastily and irrationally insist…

85 Obama’s Oval Office Infomercial

Furnished from the planks of the HMS Resolute, a British ship that once patrolled the icy waters of the Arctic, the presidential desk that is the centerpiece of the Oval Office is a talisman of power. If you’ve ever been in the same room with it (as this author has), you begin to wonder if it gives the president his air of authority instead of…

86 Obama’s Weatherization Assistance Program Yet Another Example of Fraud and Abuse

Like one of the ethically challenged aluminum siding salesmen in Barry Levinson’s film, Tin Men, the Obama Administration is desperately trying to spin its green technology spending spree as anything other than what it is: a misleading, expensive exercise in self-enrichment.  The latest example comes from the Department of Energy’…

87 Fueling the Decline: How Obama’s Energy Policies Are Propelling Us to the Next $4 per Gallon Gas Crisis

The only thing “energetic” about President Barack Obama’s energy policy is its unrelenting destruction of the capitalist spirit.  From maintaining the price-distorting regulations that artificially limit the supply of gasoline to cynically suggesting that his calls for more nuclear power plants and off-shore drilling will benefit…

88 Al Gore Emerges from Hiding, Calls Us a “Criminal Generation”

Somehow, it seems poetically just that Al Gore finally emerged from his snow-covered bunker just one day after the world collectively witnessed a false Pacific tsunami alarm.  Following Chile’s tragic earthquake, we watched as a destructive wave supposedly swept toward Hawaii and other inhabited Pacific islands.  The primary difference…

89 Al Gore Pivots to the Bottom Line

Buried near the bottom of last Sunday’s Dana Milbank Washington Post piece titled “Global warming’s snowball fight,” there is this snippet:  “Al Gore, for one, seems to realize it’s time for a new tactic.  New TV ads released during last week’s blizzards by Gore’s climate advocacy group say…

90 Global Warming Dead-Enders Imitate Gilligan’s Island

Decades after Japan surrendered to conclude World War II, legend persisted of abandoned Japanese soldiers scattered across the Pacific, fighting a war they’d already lost.  This week, desperate global warming alarmists did a brilliant imitation amid record winter storms.  The legend of fanatical Japanese dead-enders actually had a…
