So-Called "Railway Safety Act" Constitutes a Political Handout to Big Labor That Does Nothing to Improve Safety At All

America as we know it was built largely upon and because of our rail industry, and today it remains a pillar of our economy.

Unfortunately, a destructive proposal before Congress misleadingly named the "Railway Safety Act" (RSA), part of broader surface transportation reauthorization, threatens great harm to our railroads.

Simply put, the bill has nothing to do with improving safety, but has a lot to do with advancing the political agenda of Big Labor.  At a moment when inflation burdens American families and fragile supply chains remain vulnerable to disruption, the last thing our economy or rail sector need is another costly federal mandate imposed upon one of the nation’s most important transportation sectors.

As an initial matter, as noted by The Wall Street Journal, the…[more]

CFIF Praises RSC "Honset Solutions" FY2012 Budget Proposal Print E-mail
Wednesday, April 13 2011

In a letter to Congressman Jim Jordan, Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), the Center for Individual Freedom praises the RSC "Honest Solutions" FY2012 budget proposal as a "truly conservative, no-nonsense and pro-growth" plan "that promises to aggressively tackle the nation’s debt and spending crisis through smaller government and spending restraint, not tax increases."

April 13, 2011

The Honorable Jim Jordan
United States House of Representatives
1524 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Congressman Jordan,

On behalf of its more than 300,000 activists and supporters nationwide, the Center for Individual Freedom (CFIF) wishes to thank you and the Republican Study Committee (RSC) for proposing a truly conservative, no-nonsense and pro-growth FY2012 budget plan that promises to aggressively tackle the nation’s debt and spending crisis through smaller government and spending restraint, not tax increases.

The RSC budget proposal, “Honest Solutions,” complements the bold plan put forth by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, which CFIF also strongly supports.  It provides a path to fiscal sanity by repealing ObamaCare, reforming unsustainable entitlement programs, reducing federal spending to 18% of GDP, below the historical average, and eliminating deficit spending by balancing the budget in less than ten years.  Furthermore, it promotes growth by making the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent and through further tax deceases.

In short, the RSC “Honest Solutions” budget blueprint recognizes that the answer to the nation’s debt and spending crisis is not higher taxes, more spending and greater government intrusion, as President Obama and a substantial majority of Congressional Democrats continue to advocate.  The answer, as both Chairman Ryan’s and the RSC proposal outline, is a more efficient and limited federal government that encourages, not discourages, economic growth.

Sincerely,

/s/

Jeffrey Mazzella
President
