Image of the Day: U.S. Internet Speeds Skyrocketed After Ending Failed Title II "Net Neutrality" Experiment

CFIF often highlights how the Biden Administration's bizarre decision to resurrect failed Title II "Net Neutrality" internet regulation, which caused private broadband investment to decline for the first time ever outside of a recession during its brief experiment at the end of the Obama Administration, is a terrible idea that will only punish consumers if allowed to take effect.

Here's what happened after that brief experiment was repealed under the Trump Administration and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai - internet speeds skyrocketed despite late-night comedians' and left-wing activists' warnings that the internet was doomed:

On the Climate of Antisemitism and Political Donations of Professors and Administrators at Columbia University and Other Colleges Across the Country:

"As federal Department of Education and congressional investigators gear up to probe the climate of antisemitism at Columbia University and other colleges across the country, they might want to start by looking into the professors and administrators who fund antisemites.

They're easy to find. Just look up donors to antisemitic Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) who list their employer as Columbia in a federal database. I found at least seven professors and a vice dean at the school who donated to one or both of the lawmakers.

These faculty members are hardly alone in New York. Professors and administrators at New York University and the City University of New York gave to Tlaib and Omar in each of the last three election cycles. In total, staff at the three schools gave nearly $70,000 to the 'Squad' representatives, including $28,000 so far this election cycle -- the most ever."

On Iran Apparently Believing It's Safer to Attack the United States Than Israel:

"Whatever 'deal' was brokered between Washington and Tehran to put an end to the 170-plus attacks on U.S. bases and commercial shipping throughout the Middle East since October, it has apparently run its course.

It did not take long to unravel. Two days after Israel launched its retaliatory April 19 strike on Iran, Iranian-backed proxies fired as many as five rockets from the Iraq town of Zummar toward a U.S. base in Rumalyn, Syria. Aircraft from the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq and Syria reportedly destroyed the launcher.

Was this the 'within seconds' response that Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani proclaimed prior to the Israeli strikes on Isfahan? Probably. So far, Tehran's kinetic response has been largely oriented toward the U.S. and not Israel."

On the FCC's Move to Regulate the Internet:

"Remember when progressives said the Trump Administration's rollback of net neutrality would break the internet? Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel now concedes this was wrong, yet she plans to reclaim political control over the internet anyway to stop a parade of new and highly doubtful horribles.

"The FCC on Thursday is expected to vote to reclassify broadband providers as common carriers under Title II of the 1934 Communications Act. This will let the commission regulate providers like AT&T, including by fixing prices and micro-managing network investment. Why does the FCC need this power?

"She concedes that providers don't block, throttle or charge more to speed up sites. Yet this was the justification for the Obama FCC's Title II power grab. Ms. Rosenworcel's new justification is that 'loopholes' in FCC oversight have left the internet vulnerable to national-security, cyber-security and privacy threats. This is ridiculous, and she knows it. ...

"There's no legal, economic or equity justification for Ms. Rosenworcel's pending power grab. It will slow the spread of 5G access. This diktat is all about asserting political control over more of the private economy -- no matter the consequences."

On President Biden's Potential Plans to Declare a 'Climate Emergency' Prior to the Election:

"Democrats have already made it clear that they will stop at nothing -- nothing -- to prevent Donald Trump from winning in November. So, we weren't surprised to read reports that President Joe Biden might declare a 'climate emergency' this year in hopes that it gooses his reelection odds. Never mind that such a declaration would put the U.S. right on the path to a Venezuela-style future.

Late last week, Bloomberg reported that 'White House officials are weighing whether to declare a national climate emergency several months out from the 2024 election.'

Bloomberg goes on to report that:

'White House advisers are divided over the idea of declaring a climate emergency, with some saying it wouldn't provide Biden with enough newfound authority to make substantial changes, the people said. Others, however, argue such an announcement would galvanize climate-minded voters.

Read that again. Inside the White House, the only reason being given for not declaring an emergency is that it wouldn't give Biden enough dictatorial powers."

On a Columbia University Rabbi Telling Students to Go Home for Their Safety In Response to Dangerous Anti-Israel Protests:

"A top rabbi at Columbia University and Barnard College is telling students to go home 'as soon as possible,' and remain there for their own safety at this time after anti-Israel protesters attacked Jews and hurled antisemitic threats at them.

"'What we are witnessing in and around campus is terrible and tragic. The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University's Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students' safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy,' Rabbi Elie Buechler said in a mass message to Columbia and Barnard students Sunday morning."

On Government's Automobile Kill Switch:

"Soon the government might shut down your car.

"President Joe Biden's new infrastructure gives bureaucrats that power.

"You probably didn't hear about that because when media covered it, few mentioned the requirement that by 2026, every American car must 'monitor' the driver, determine if he is impaired and, if so, 'limit vehicle operation.'

"Rep. Thomas Massie objected, complaining that the law makes government 'judge, jury and executioner on such a fundamental right!'

"Congress approved the law anyway."

Reporting On a New Poll Shoring Swing State Voters Prioritize Securing the Border Over Funding for Ukraine:

"Battleground state swing voters overwhelmingly believe stopping President Biden's border invasion is more important than bankrolling Ukraine's forever war with Russia, a newly released poll found.

"Conducted for the Heritage Foundation by RMG Research Inc., the survey of 1,000 likely swing-state voters found strong support for stopping the invasion at the U.S. southern border and little appetite for shipping more taxpayer dollars to Kyiv. When asked which they believe is more significant, 50 percent, a dramatic plurality of those polled, said it is more important to 'secure the border' than to 'provide funding for Ukraine.'

"Only 11 percent said it is more important to continue funding Ukraine, while 29 percent said, 'both equally.'"

On the Need to Restore U.S. Military Deterrence:

"'Don't,' President Joe Biden replied when asked for his message to Iran during a press conference Friday afternoon, followed by a lamentable 'showdown' glare. It was the second time he'd used the word in an attempt at dramatic understatement in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel. Vice President Kamala Harris has also used the line in interviews with the same cringey effect.

"But as the world now knows, Iran is unmoved by these cheap, tough-guy theatrics. Indeed, it proceeded with a drone and missile strike against Israel the very next day, marking the first time since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 that the Iranian regime has launched a direct military assault on Israel. U.S. and U.K. planes intervened by downing some of the Iranian-launched drones, and the United Nations Security Council met on Sunday.

"Iran's unprecedented missile strike against Israel signals the beginning of a fraught geopolitical era in which America's once-vaunted military deterrence has evaporated into thin air. Since the early months of Biden's term in office, foreign adversaries have openly flouted the United States's many warnings and 'red lines,' while an emergent, China-led parallel global order has marched steadily forward in advancing its military priorities. American allies in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East face existential threats of a kind unseen in a generation, while the U.S. remains unable to muster the political will necessary to lead the free world and freedom's enemies."

On How Taxpayers Will Subsidize Democrat Voter Registration and Other Election Efforts:

"Progressives are using legal loopholes and the power of the federal government to maximize Democrat votes in the 2024 election at taxpayers' expense, RealClearInvestigations has found.

The methods include voter registration and mobilization campaigns by ostensibly nonpartisan charities that target Democrats using demographic data as proxies, and the Biden administration's unprecedented demand that every federal agency 'consider ways to expand citizens' opportunities to register to vote and to obtain information about, and participate in, the electoral process.'

A dizzying array of overwhelmingly 'democracy-focused' entities with ties to the Democratic Party operating as charities and funded with hundreds of millions of dollars from major liberal 'dark money' vehicles are engaged in a sprawling campaign to register the voters, deliver them the ballots, and figuratively and sometimes literally harvest the votes necessary to defeat Donald Trump."

Reporting on the Rise in Consumer Prices:

"The consumer price index accelerated at a faster than expected pace in March, pushing inflation higher and likely keeping the Federal Reserve on hold with interest rates.

"The CPI, a broad measure of goods and services costs across the economy, rose 0.4% for the month, putting the 12-month inflation rate at 3.5%, or 0.3 percentage point higher than in February. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a 0.3% gain and a 3.4% year-over-year level.

"Excluding volatile food and energy components, core CPI also accelerated 0.4% on a monthly basis while rising 3.8% from a year ago, compared to respective estimates for 0.3% and 3.7%."

If TikTok's data collection or manipulation under Chinese ownership is the grave danger that our government says it is (and it may well be), then wouldn't the prudent action be to ban it immediately rather than some time down the road?
