So-Called "Railway Safety Act" Constitutes a Political Handout to Big Labor That Does Nothing to Improve Safety At All

America as we know it was built largely upon and because of our rail industry, and today it remains a pillar of our economy.

Unfortunately, a destructive proposal before Congress misleadingly named the "Railway Safety Act" (RSA), part of broader surface transportation reauthorization, threatens great harm to our railroads.

Simply put, the bill has nothing to do with improving safety, but has a lot to do with advancing the political agenda of Big Labor.  At a moment when inflation burdens American families and fragile supply chains remain vulnerable to disruption, the last thing our economy or rail sector need is another costly federal mandate imposed upon one of the nation’s most important transportation sectors.

As an initial matter, as noted by The Wall Street Journal, the…[more]

FDR's Address to a Joint Session of Congress, December 8, 1941:

"[On] December 7, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan… As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole Nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory."

On Stimulating the Economy:

"The ultimate source of jobs is the vast, chaotic entrepreneurial churn that has always characterized the American economy at its best. No recovery is sustainable without it, yet the White House remains fixated on the gewgaws of new government programs and quick gimmicks."

On the Global Warming Email Scandal:

“Global warming cheerleaders in the media were quick to defend the scandalous e-mails, explaining that, among scientists, the words ‘trick,’ ‘hide the decline’ and ‘garbage’ do not mean ‘trick,’ ‘hide the decline’ and ‘garbage.’ These words actually mean ‘onion soup,’ ‘sexual submissive’ and 'Gary, Ind.'...

"The CRU [the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit] was regularly cited as the leading authority on ‘global climate analysis’ -- including by the very news outlets that are burying the current scandal, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. The CRU alone received more than $23 million in taxpayer funds for its work on global warming.”

On the President's Afghanistan Speech at West Point:

"What messages did our president's bait-and-switch speech just send?

"To our troops: Risk your lives for a mission I've written off.

"To our allies: Race you to the exit ramp.

"To the Taliban: Allah is merciful, your prayers will soon be answered.

"To Afghan leaders: Get your stolen wealth out of the country.

"To Pakistan: Renew your Taliban friendships now (and be nice to al Qaeda)."

On Government-Run Health Care "Savings":

"Here is a math problem for you: Assume that the legislation establishing government control of medical care is passed and that it 'brings down the cost of medical care.' You pay $500 a year less for your medical care, but the new costs put on employers is passed on to consumers, so that you pay $300 a year more for groceries and $200 a year more for gasoline, while the new mandates put on insurance companies raise your premiums by $300 a year, how much money have you saved?"

On Boosting the Economy:

"The economy wants to heal itself. But the president keeps heaping burdens upon it. His job approval has tumbled as Americans recoil from the taxes and spending proposed in Obamacare and cap and trade, and from the massive debt he's piling up.

"For the economy to grow, government must shrink. But the president and Congress are rushing pell mell in the opposite direction."

On Thanksgiving Meals in the Field:

"[T]he combined total [for Thanksgiving dinner for U.S. forces overseas]: 267,399 pounds of turkey; 63,776 pounds of ham; 61, 813 pounds of stuffing; 65,329 pounds of potatoes; 51,652 pies. These numbers don't include the burgeoning figures for the rest of the menu: roast beef, shrimp, cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes and cake.

On Politics 101:

On ObamaCare, Medicaid and Unfunded Mandates:

“If ObamaCare passes with its expansion of Medicaid benefits -- but with no federal funding of the extra spending -- it is [state governors] and their legislatures that will have to bite the bullet and pass new taxes to pay for it.

"Since states are already facing mammoth financial problems as a result of dwindling revenues and swelling expenditures in the recession, these additional burdens could be politically fatal. Unless Democratic governors want to avoid the fate of one of their late brethren, former Gov. Jon Corzine of New Jersey, whose political career was ended in a blaze of new taxes, they might want to call their buddies in Congress and ask them to lay off the unfunded mandates, particularly during this recession.”

On the Climate Change Crisis:

"A climate crisis of worldwide proportions is unfolding right before our eyes, and not even the most powerful world leaders can do anything to stop it. It looks like 2009 may very well turn out to be the fourth straight year of declining global temperatures at a time when carbon dioxide levels continue to rise - the opposite of what was predicted by vaunted climate models...

"For now, continuous falling temperatures are truly a global crisis, coming at a time when some very powerful people will soon be meeting in Copenhagen to remedy increasing temperatures. World leaders should stay home and enjoy the weather. Unless, of course, they're not as concerned about changing climate as they are about redistributing wealth."
