So-Called "Railway Safety Act" Constitutes a Political Handout to Big Labor That Does Nothing to Improve Safety At All

America as we know it was built largely upon and because of our rail industry, and today it remains a pillar of our economy.

Unfortunately, a destructive proposal before Congress misleadingly named the "Railway Safety Act" (RSA), part of broader surface transportation reauthorization, threatens great harm to our railroads.

Simply put, the bill has nothing to do with improving safety, but has a lot to do with advancing the political agenda of Big Labor.  At a moment when inflation burdens American families and fragile supply chains remain vulnerable to disruption, the last thing our economy or rail sector need is another costly federal mandate imposed upon one of the nation’s most important transportation sectors.

As an initial matter, as noted by The Wall Street Journal, the…[more]

On President Obama Chairing a Meeting of the U.N. Security Council:

"Tomorrow, President Obama will chair a special nuclear-disarmament meeting by the United Nations Security Council. The White House bills this as a historic first, but it is typical of Mr. Obama's emphasis on style over substance. He will appear before the body with the weakest foreign-policy record of any new U.S. president in recent memory. An around-the-world tour of international hot spots shows that for all the president's lofty rhetoric, he can point to precious few accomplishments."

Regarding President Obama's About-Face On Taxing the Middle Class:

"The mandate in question is the financial penalty that Democrats want to impose on healthy citizens who don't have health insurance. One of the main health care bills under consideration calls the proposal a 'tax.'

"As for the negative effect the tax would have on hard-working Americans, the president ought to consult himself. Last year, he said the same proposal would be punitive and unfair. In other words, Mr. Obama was against this tax before he was for it."

Regarding the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN):

“It is clear that ACORN has fostered a culture of corruption. With investigations of ACORN now occurring in 20 states, it is time for the FBI to open up a full-scale investigation into possible criminal conduct by ACORN.”

On President Obama's Sunday Media Blitz:

"The White House doesn't buy the notion that President Obama, who appeared on five talk shows Sunday and is heading next for David Letterman's couch, could be wearing out his welcome on the tube. Sure, this is a president who has dissected basketball brackets on ESPN, gone for burgers with Brian Williams, showed Steve Kroft his swing set, dissed Kanye West (off the record) with CNBC and ordered a general to shave Stephen Colbert's head. By that standard, Obama's Sunday blitz was a mere throat-clearing that, as it turned out, produced little in the way of big news. And some journalists -- even as they continue to clamor for access -- say he is diluting the product."

On House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Taxpayer Protests:

"What Pelosi and others are doing is simple: if you are on the losing side of a debate, stop debating and start attacking. Pelosi is now saying that protesters who are exercising their First Amendment rights are 'frightening.' She likens the debate that's going on now over health care to the potential for violence and disruption that was prevalent in the 1970s. In other words, she wants people to just shut up and fall in line. Well... that's not going to happen... not this time!"

On the Latest Version of "Health Care Reform" Introduced Yesterday by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus:

"Like the bills that have been approved by committees in the House and Senate, the Baucus plan is built on mandates, expanded governmental control, and taxes. It would require all Americans to sign up for government-approved insurance or face a hefty federal tax penalty — up to $3,800 per family. Employers would be required to offer insurance conforming to government specs or pay a head tax on each of their full-time employees.

"There is no breakthrough miracle cure to be found here: Insurance coverage is expanded with tried-and-true, heavy-handed regulation. Americans who don’t play along will be disciplined by the IRS."

Regarding House Democrats and Rep. Joe Wilson's "You Lie" Statement:

"Led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, they have staged a delirious passion play in which they have tried to nail Mr. Wilson to a cross of forced contrition. They threatened to drag him to the well of the House, and then spanked him with a formal 'resolution of disapproval,' which is the epitome of those bearing the biggest sins throwing the stones."

On ACORN and Its Representatives Offering to Help Undercover Pimps and Prostitutes, Including Urging Them to Lie to the IRS About Their Income:

"The radical activist group ACORN is the E. F. Hutton of prostitution. It stands ready to provide discreet advice on setting up a brothel and engaging in other, associated acts of criminality. When ACORN talks, pimps and hookers listen."

On the 9/12 Taxpayer Protests:

"You've probably heard descriptions of the marchers as crazies and haters and fanatics.  Perhaps there were some in the crowd. Far more important, though, was the very presence of so many everyday Americans protesting in Washington, just eight months into unified Democratic control of the White House and Congress. What did Barack Obama and his party's leadership on Capitol Hill do to bring doctors and truck drivers together in common cause on the streets of the nation's capital?  More than anything, these people are afraid that the new president is running the country off a cliff.  They're in no mood to remain silent now."

On the Attacks of September 11, 2001:

"On September the 11th, enemies of freedom committed an act of war against our country. ... Americans have known surprise attacks, but never before on thousands of civilians. All of this was brought upon us in a single day, and night fell on a different world, a world where freedom itself is under attack."

"By the end of this year, there could be 10 socialist mayors in the U.S. That's the most since the 1910s, when socialism was the shiny new object embraced by educated elites. But what excuse do Democrats have today -- after 100 years of socialism's miserable, murderous failures -- for embracing this toxic ideology?Back in 1911, according to one historical count, members of the Socialist Party of America…[more]
