So-Called "Railway Safety Act" Constitutes a Political Handout to Big Labor That Does Nothing to Improve Safety At All

America as we know it was built largely upon and because of our rail industry, and today it remains a pillar of our economy.

Unfortunately, a destructive proposal before Congress misleadingly named the "Railway Safety Act" (RSA), part of broader surface transportation reauthorization, threatens great harm to our railroads.

Simply put, the bill has nothing to do with improving safety, but has a lot to do with advancing the political agenda of Big Labor.  At a moment when inflation burdens American families and fragile supply chains remain vulnerable to disruption, the last thing our economy or rail sector need is another costly federal mandate imposed upon one of the nation’s most important transportation sectors.

As an initial matter, as noted by The Wall Street Journal, the…[more]

On the Obama Administration's Claims of Jobs Created or Saved by the Stimulus:

“[T]his whole discussion [of jobs created or saved by the stimulus] has had an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ quality from the very beginning. You can't measure saved jobs. Arguing over the precision or imprecision of the numbers, which are fictional at the beginning, is like arguing that there are [not] 12 angels on the head of a pin but only ten, one of them is a leprechaun and the other flew away on Wednesday. This whole thing has a bizarre quality about it.

"And when you hear these reports, as we're hearing now with the fictional congressional districts, what the risk for the administration is that it becomes an object of ridicule. And once that happens, it's hard to actually stop.”

On the President's Job Approval Ratings:

"President Barack Obama's job approval rating is under 50% for the first time, according to a new national survey from Quinnipiac University. The survey, conducted November 9-16 among 2,518 registered voters, shows 48% approve of the way Obama is handling his job as president, while 42% disapprove. That is a slight decline from Quinnipiac's last poll in early October, which showed 50% approval and 41% disapproval."

On Trying Foreign Terrorists in Federal Court:

"In the string of amazing decisions made during the first year of the Obama administration, nothing seems more like sheer insanity than the decision to try foreign terrorists, who have committed acts of war against the United States, in federal court, as if they were American citizens accused of crimes."

On 9/11 Terrorists Being Tried in NYC:

"[Khalid Sheik] Mohammed and his murderous crew don't belong in civilian courts, where they will get defendant rights designed for ordinary criminal suspects. They declared war on our nation, were captured on foreign battlefields and deserve no presumption of innocence or other constitutional protections.

"They'll use our liberties to turn the trial into propaganda for their warped cause. Their images and words will fly around the world as fodder for a new generation of jihadists. The federal courthouse and detention center will become a fortress. The judge, prosecutors, witnesses, federal agents and jury will need protection, some for years. It's madness."

Regarding the Ft. Hood Massacre:

"Some 3,500 Muslims now serve in the U.S. military. The overwhelming majority of them are loyal Americans who see no conflict between their personal religious duty and service to their country. But there can no place in our military for those persons of any faith who do. America has now seen the horrors of what 'diversity at any cost' can lead to."

On ObamaCare's Individual Mandate and the Threat of Jail Time for Failing to Purchase Health Insurance:

“In all the sanitized TV news reports about the House-passed health care plan, no one mentions the shocking tax penalties and maybe jail time implicit in the bill's nearly 2,000 pages. This is what could await uninsured Americans who do not want to buy health insurance as the bill demands them to do - or else.

"Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), in a letter to the House Ways and Means Committee, confirms that failure to comply with the terms of the law that the Democrats passed last weekend could put people in jail. The JCT told the committee that anyone who decides not to maintain ‘acceptable health insurance coverage’ or, absent that, pay the individual health insurance mandate tax of about 2.5 percent of income, would be liable to large fines or prison sentences.”

On the Men and Women of the U.S. Armed Forces:

“I will always do my duty no matter what the price. I’ve counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice.
Oh and I don’t want to die for you, but if dying’s asked of me I’ll bear that cross with honor, cause freedom don’t come free. I’m an American Soldier, an American. Beside my brothers and my sisters, I will proudly take a stand. When liberty’s in jeopardy, I will always do what’s right. I’m out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight. American Soldier,
I’m an American, Soldier.”

On Healthcare and the Free Market:

“Advocates of government control want you to believe that the serious shortcomings of our medical and insurance system are failures of the free market. But that's impossible because our market is not free. Each state operates a cozy medical and insurance cartel that restricts competition through licensing and keeps prices higher than they would be in a genuine free market. But the planners won't talk about that. After all, if government is the problem in the first place, how can they justify a government takeover?

“Many people are priced out of the medical and insurance markets for one reason: the politicians' refusal to give up power. Allowing them to seize another 16 percent of the economy won't solve our problems.  Freedom will.”

On "Terrorism" and the Ft. Hood Massacre:

“Islamist terrorists don't all have al Qaeda union cards in their wallets. Terrorism's increasingly the domain of entrepreneurs and independent contractors. Under Muslim jurisprudence, jihad's an individual responsibility. [Ft. Hood shooter Maj. Nidal] Hasan was a self-appointed jihadi.  Yet we're told he was just having a bad day.

“Our politically correct Army plays along. Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey won't utter the word ‘terrorism.’ The Forces Command Public Affairs Office guidance for officers never mentions ‘Islam’ or ‘terror,’ leaving you unsure whether there was a traffic accident down at Fort Hood, or maybe an outbreak of swine flu.”

On Political Correctness and the Ft. Hood Massacre:

"The intimidation of so much of the government becomes total, so great is the fear of being accused of hurting the feelings of evildoers. Winston Churchill got it right in the run-up to World War II, when good people couldn't bear to look evil in the face. ‘The malice of the wicked,’ he said, ‘is reinforced by the weakness of the virtuous.’"

"By the end of this year, there could be 10 socialist mayors in the U.S. That's the most since the 1910s, when socialism was the shiny new object embraced by educated elites. But what excuse do Democrats have today -- after 100 years of socialism's miserable, murderous failures -- for embracing this toxic ideology?Back in 1911, according to one historical count, members of the Socialist Party of America…[more]
